Latest Soccer News: Chivas USA equalizes with a Lillingston goal

Posted by Joel Shirey On May - 28 - 2009

In the latest soccer news: After giving up a 2-0 lead against DC United, Chivas USA looked determined to score and win the game dominating the first half of play but unable to capitalize with a goal. In the 56th minute, Claudio Lopez played spoiler hitting an excellent set piece goal in the far corner. His goal and the Wizards first 20 minutes of the second half hinted that KC might steal the three points.

This soccer video features higlights of the 1-1 draw Chivas vs KC.

However, Chivas USA rebounded nicely from  Eduardo Lillingston's sensational goal scored in the 64th minute providing an inspirational comeback. Although KC Wizard suffered from the ejection of Josh Wolff and Santiago Hirsig, the Kansas City Wizards sustained the attacking onslaught of Chivas USA who were unable to score the winning goal, despite experiencing a two-man advantage.

During the majority of the game, the Chivas dominated play providing great movement off the ball and offering an organized defensive line. In the second half, the Wizards play suggested the tables would turn but we're unable to maintain their dominance for 20 minutes when Chivas USA re assumed their touch on the game finishing the game strong.

From a USMNT supporters perspective, Sacha Kljestan suffered from a hard tackle where he disappeared from the game due to his nagging injury. At halftime, he was replaced by the other Sacha, Sacha Victorine. It will be interesting to see if Kljestan plays on Thursday against the Fire. How will his injury and poor MLS play affect his status with the USMNT? His inclusion or exclusion will indicate how Coach Bob Bradley rates him heading into two difficult qualifiers.

Should Chivas USA have won the game? Was the Wolff red card too harsh? Should Hirsig have been sent off earlier for his strong challenge? Share your thoughts.

In the latest soccer news: In the "Battle of the Bads", LA Galaxy drew blood early with a Landon Donovan score which was the first goal scored in the first 30 minutes of their season. Despite the bonehead play of Marcello Saragosa who received a red card for a push in the back of the head to Eddie Legwis, giving the LA Galaxy a man advantage, FC Dallas battled back from adversity with a Drew Moor header. His timely goal salvaged FC Dallas a point with a 1-1 draw, despite the staggering 20-9 shot advantage favoring the LA Galaxy.

Besides predicting a 1-1 draw, Joelstradamus appears to have received more prophetic MLS outcomes stating "goal scoring will take a backseat with Keeper Donovan Ricketts manning the pipes, and keeper Ray Burse could use a lawn chair if the Galaxy continue their 8-1-1 formation (just kidding). The field will witness a lot of action but both teams will only muster a goal a piece. Draw 1-1."

It seems certain that the 3-5-2 formation has worked well for FC Dallas given their injury situation. Brek Shea and Bruno Guarda should continue to earn playing time as they have inspired the level of play. The Hoops need to maintain their composure and use their frustration to defend well and score goals. Their lack of composure could cost Coach Hyndman his job.

What was Saragosa thinking? SHould LA have won? When will Coach Hyndman replace the ineffective Feirrera? Share your thoughts.

In the latest soccer news: After going down 0-1 at BMO field, it appeared that Toronto Fc might experience another Jekyll and Hyde moments where they perform good one week, and the next week forget that they can be a dominate force. Amado Guevara and Danny Dichio assumed a leadership role and willed TFC to a 3-1 win scoring three unanswered goals. Guevara scored both goals from long-range, and Dichio had his hand in each of the three goals.  Although TFC has attempted to upgrade the forwards, Danny Dichio has proven the most consistent performer of Barrett and Vitti. His field vision proved MLS worthy when he provided a no-look pass to DeRosario who scored on the exposed keeper, Matt Reis.

This soccer video features highlights of TFC vs the Revs.

If TFC can continue to play solid defense and continue the midfield chemistry of Guevara and DeRosario, TFC should remain in the top three of the Eastern Conference. Playing with a boisterous crowd at BMO field and a familiararity of playing on their synthetic surfaces bodes well for the Reds who are searching for their first playoff berth in club history.

New England must regroup and hope that their veterans leaders Twellman, Badilla and Albright return sooner or later. Their Eastern Conference dissension indicates that any team is not immune to injuries and the rise of play from the other Eastern opponents.

What was your take on the game? Who was better Guevara or Dichio? Will TFC challenge for first or second place in the Eastern Conference? Share your thoughts.

In the latest soccer news, Coach Bob Bradley announced his 24 man roster for the Costa Rica and Honduras Qualifier.USMNT will face Costa Rica in the unfriendly confines of Saprissa Stadium facing the Ticos who have dominated qualifying in Costa Rica. The USMNT have tallied a 0-5-1 record against Costa Rica away and would like to win their first on June 3rd.

The US roster boasted its regulars and added a few pleasant surprises such as Benny Feilhaber and Marvell Wynne who will be tested against some of the veteran players. After falling from the Coach Bradley's good graces due to injury, suspect training habits, and lack of playing time, Feilhaber will be the long shot to make the 18 man squad, since the US boasts in form central midfielders such as Bradley, Torres, Edu and Mastroeni. Talented and remembered most for his stunning goal against El Tri in the Gold Cup Final, Feilhaber hopes to resurrect his national team career now that he is earning playing time for AGF Aarhus.

Marvell Wynne's inclusion will start the blog debates on who should play at right back. The obvious choice to start at right back  will be veteran Frankie Hejduk with Cherundolo recovering from injury. But, if Marvell Wynne receives an opportunity for the Honduras game. His speed and defensive recovery has US fans salivating to witness Wynne to develop into a potential starter.

Another intriguing player who might earn a start is Jonathan Spector because of the poor play at left back. Heath Pearce and Jonathan Bornstein have yet to cement their place as the starter. DaMarcus Beasley might pose a liability against Los Ticos and might fair better against Honduras at home.

There were a few disappointments in the lineups with the inclusion of Danny Califf, Heath Pearce, and Jonathan Bornstein as they have failed to play well lately for the USMNT.  Calling in a foreign-based central defender prospect like Michael Parkhurst or Clarence Goodson seemed a more viable option. Jimmy Conrad and Chad Marshall would have been MLS candidates to offer depth for the US roster.

Defender Eric Lichaj (Aston Villa) and keeper Luis Robles (Kaiserslautern) will attend the camp for further evaluation and to train with the squad. Could Bradley be grooming Lichaj to step in as one of the wing backs?

Facing Costa Rica away and playing on their green carpet, it seems logical that Coach Bradley will go with a defense first mentality from the back. Many have suggested that Beasley could start at left back, but I believe that Spector will earn the start. Mastroeni could have easily started next to Bradley, but Maurice Edu has showed good progress earning playing time, a position hoping that he will not relinquish.

If the USNMT are trailing at halftime, it would not surprise me to see both Francisco Torres and Freddy Adu whose possession skills and flair could give the USA the spark that they need.
