Soccer Goals: LA Galaxy vs Real Salt Lake - MLS Cup Predictions

Posted by Joel Shirey On November - 23 - 2009

Soccer Goals: After predicting in the preseason that RSL would not qualify for the playoffs due to their poor play and lack of acquisitions, RSL overcame adversity, proving that miracles do happen landing in the 2009 MLS Cup. Although yielding below a .500 winning percentage, RSL caught Fire (no pun intended) at the right time defeating the 2008 Champions, Columbus Crew, and talented Chicago Fire. I'll admit that I was wrong for counting out a RSL side that appeared disfunctional one game and world beater the next. For my preseason predicition, I willingly eat crow and humble pie. LOL.

That being sad, both teams boast dangerous qualities on both sides of the ball. Despite having the most porous defense last season, the Galaxy have turned a 180' defensively with the additions of Greg Berhalter, Omar Gonzalez, and the reemergence of 2008 Rookie of the Year, Sean Franklin. Offensively, the yellow and blue boast the striking trio of David Beckham, Landon Donovan (2009 MLS MVP), and Edson Buddle.

Though their three pronged attack scares any top MLS defense, the Galaxy will prove vulnerable in two areas. In the center midfield -- where Davide Beckham will be suffering from a nagging ankle injury that will require an injection for his ailments causes real concern -- and the necessary defensive speed to neutralize the dynamic and speedy attacking sequences that RSL will unleash, the Galaxy might not realize their dream season.

Riding a big a wave momentum from their spirited playoff run, RSL boasts a dynamic team that passes well, while offering excellent team speed.  The RSL midfield is packed with talented figures such as Beckerman, Morales, Williams, and Johnson, though not the status of Donovan or Beckham. Couple the midfield's creativity with the pace of Robbie Findley, Yura Movsysian, and Fabian Espindola presuming that he comes off the bench, the team possesses intriguing attributes to unsettle the slow but stable Galaxy defense.

In my opinion, two factors will ultimately grant RSL the advantage and title. First, RSL's attacking speed will cause problems for LA all night, as they have struggled against speedy teams (see FC Dallas' 6-2 victory in Home Depot Center). Who will matchup with Robbie Findley and Yura Movsysian's menacing runs? I think that answer is fairly self explanatory.

Secondly, playing on a wide, synthetic and slick pitch should favor RSL, as they will utilize their width and quick one-touch passing to stretch out the team and its shape. Although a fairy tail ending would provide an excellent jolt of excitement to the US soccer community, if David Beckham and Landon Donovan fight against the odds and return the trophy back to Los Angeles. Unfortunatly, for the marketing geniuses and those looking to grow the sport domestically, their hopes will be diminished by a 2-1 RSL victory in extra time. Findley and Beckerman score goals to bring RSL their first Championship. Findley wins the MLS MVP trophy.

Who do you believe will win? What will the score be? Share your thoughts.

Soccer Goals: Denmark shines in a 3-1 victory over USA

Posted by Joel Shirey On November - 19 - 2009

Soccer Goals: With numerous players out due to injury, club duties, or personal reasons, the USMNT faced a Danish team hungry for a home victory in hopes to build team depth and chemistry. Compared to the Slovak friendly, the intensity, excitement and passion were on full display, as both teams competed fiercely in the first half. Leading at halftime thanks in part to a first half goal from forward Jeff Cunningham, disaster ensued in the second half, when the Danes turned up the offensive and defensive pressure scoring three goals in an eight minute span. The US would succumb to the Great Danes 3-1 in stunning fashion.

Soccer Videos: Highlights of the USA vs Denmark

Not knowing what had hit them, like a dizzy and punished UFC fighter right after a devestating T.K.O., the red, white, and blue failed to recover from their beatdown, a knockout blow and a steady reminder, proving that the US leans on their key players to compete with the higher echelon international competitors.

Not all was lost in this friendly, though, US' fans and coaches received verification from Hejduk's shocking play, that his USMNT service might no longer be needed. Personifying a true warrior representing the USA with heart and passion for over a decade, Frankie Hejduk exhibited a penchant for poor defensive postioning and reckless tackling, volatile challenges that should have resulted in at least a yellow card or more likely an early shower. Hey-Dude no longer merits consideration due to age, injury concerns, and poor form. Coming to the conclusion earlier rather than later will allow the US coaching staff to focus on new players in the January camp. Thanks Frankie, for your spirit, energy, and contributions to US Soccer.

Falling deeper in the doghouse for both club and country, Jozy Altidore was added to the list of players, who fared poorly due to issues concerning his first touch, hold-up play, and fitness. Questions still persist to whether he should be a starter, since recently injured Charlie Davies stole the limelight, absorbing opponents defensive pressure with his speed and tenacity and assuming a greater share of the offensive burden which screened Jozy from media scrutiny . By creatng space and providing a world class work rate, CD9's attributes complimented the former NYRB skills and masked his deficiencies to transcend to new heights after a solid Confederations Cup pairing and during certain stretches of the hexagonal.

Auditioning fringe players for a potential South African spot continued on Wednesday, where the main focus centered on two positions; left back and forward. With all the negative aspects that can be drawn from the US' mediocre performance, FC Dallas forward, Jeff Cunningham demonstrated his attacking prowess with a technical left-foot strike, after stealing the ball from a goal keeper blunder. Besides scoring the goal and providing plenty of pace and hustle, the Hoops striker began to find his rhythm with teammates after scoring his first international goal, utlizing several clever flicks and probing passes to keep the Danish defense honest.

Despite the midfielders failure to create any quality service, his showing should earn him another start and a January camp invitation. Couple his strong showing with Altidore and Johnson's lackluster displays, and one can comprehend the real possibility of the former USF Bull making a strong run for a South African roster spot.

Focusing on left back appears to not have been such a high priority, as newly minted Edgar Castillo donned the US thrancite uniform as a left wing. While left back is still completely up in the air, Jonathan Bornstein did nothing to quell criticism with a performance that witnessed his hand in the concession of third goal and failed to manage man-marking on the second goal.

When Castillo entered the game late in the second half, momentum had shifted to the Danes. While the US attempted to maintain possession and mount several attacks, Castillo was silenced by the Danish marking and the US' poor speed of play. Entering the game under this scenario proved unfair, but an ideal situation would be a January Camp invite, where he would have the time to prove his worth and inclusion.

Let's examine the US performance and player grades. Enjoy!!!

Player Grades

Brad Guzan, 5.5: started the game strong but was let down by his back line - He should have made a better attempt and dive on the first goal.

Frankie Hejduk, 3: Poor club form, age, and injuries have caught up with the dynamic right back, demonstrating poor positioning, two-footed lunging tackles, and offensive overcommitment. Sadly, his international career concludes.

Jonathan Spector, 4: After producing a solid campain in his center back debut, the sequel exposed his experience, miscommunication and unfamiliarity with Bocanegra, conceding three goals in a eight-minute span. On a positive note, his passing offers a new dimension to the  possession game, which came into fruition against Slovakia.

Carlos Bocanegra, 4.5: As the captain of the team and defense, the Rennes defender failed to lead colleagues when the momentum shifted to the Danes. To make matters worse, ball watching plagued the whole back line, but he should know better. Shame on you!!!

Jonathan Bornstein, 4: After numeous opportunites to state his case for left back, Bornstein earned a starting spot once again despite his recently poor showings, where Bradley could have opted for Castillo. His ball watching consummated the third goal, standing flat footed while Martin Bernburg hammered the nail in the coffin. During the second goal, he should have communicated to one of the midfielders (especially Feilhaber) to mark a man. That is part of his job.

Benny Feilhaber, 6: commenced the game with hustle, skill, and possession. As the campaign concluded, Feilhaber had exhausted all his energy but still earned the brightest of midfield showing.

Michael Bradley, 4: Exhibited his normal defensive coverage and energy, but his errant passing lead to the third goal and stunted the US' attack. His quick turn in the second half was impressive but was stiffled by the smothering Danish defense.

Ricardo Clark, 4.5: Provided strong tackling and hustle, but his energy level caused other facets of his game to struggle (passing and shot on goal). In the 31st minute, he struck an eighteen-yard strike which sailed high. At the end of the game, he produced a nice run in the box from dribble penetration. His score would have been higher had he kept the strike on target.

Stuart Holden, 5: From the inception, fatigued played a major role in his game after playing an ardous series against Seattle and Galaxy. Couple this with his Sunday/Monday transatlantic voyage, and one can sense a recipe for disaster. When the spirited Dynamo lacked the quality crossing, creativity and work rate that he has demonstrated previously, it was evident that it wasn't his day.

Jeff Cunnigham, 6.5: Besides scoring a precise left-footed strike, the speedy striker exhibited the best Charlie Davies replacement-impersonation to date. After scoring the goal, the MLS veteran forward began to link play with midfield, utilizing clever flicks and astute passing. Despite his small stature, JC provided impressive hold-up play against the giant Danish defenders, receiving the ball and relaying it effectively. Up next, Robbie Findley.

Jozy Altidore, 4.5: offered little energy and was pushed off the ball like a point guard in the post. If he continues to demonstrate inconsistency, he will continue to fall faster down the depth chart than US automotive industry stock. In his defense, little service was granted, and his combination play improved marginally later in the second half.

Coach Bob Bradley, 5:  receives a big thumbs up for the Cunnignham and Hejduk inclusions, further evidence that Coach Bradley should examine other wing back options. However, why was Bornstein awarded another start, when Edgar Castillo warranted a look? His reactionary substitutes proved too little too late. Why did EJ not replace Altidore, when JC was experiencing better success?

Subs

Edgar Castillo, 5.5: struggled to integrate into the flow of the game and thererfore, unfairly,  did not demonstrate his flank presence or offensive prowess.

Robbie Rogers, 5: Attempted to exploit his speed but the Danes smothered the midfield and disrupted the US' possession and his opportunities.

Eddie Johnson, 4.5: offered and received little in the form of service, but his hold-up play took a sharp decline from his previous performance.

Clarence Goodson, 5: proved to be an upgrade over the starting duo, this occuring after the goal barrage.

Jimmy Conrad, 5.5: His most notable plays stemmed from his anticipation and positioning when he intercepted several soft passes crosses into the box.

What did you think of the USMNT performance? Would you like to see more of Jeff Cunningham? Should Castillo have earned a starting role? Share your thoughts.

Soccer Goals: Top Five Wish List - USA vs Denmark Friendly

Posted by Joel Shirey On November - 18 - 2009

Soccer Goals: After watching the US Soccer's rendition of "Dumb and Dumber" aptly named  "Slow and Slower", the storyline featured two target forward players against Slovak, the main actors who could not distract the Slovak defense with its hillarious hold-up play. Although US soccer matinee embraced the possession game and Jonathan Spector's inspiring center back debut, the punch line faded as Jonathan Bornstein ceded dribble penetration sequences on several occasions and while the the protagonists (Casey and Altidore) could not "crack up" the stingiest of defenses.

Soccer Videos: The USMNT arrives in Aarhus

To make matters worse, my only wish before the game was a speedy super hero (forward) in the starting Xl, the modern-day hero who saves the day wearing his red cape and a ridicoulously tight and contoured outfit. However, in US soccer fashion, I was miserably let down with the type of news that one receives at the mechanics, the stinging feeling one gets when they inform you that your engine is going to cost at least $2,000 and won't know what the full price until they lift up the motor. Although Jozy Altidore features a decent pair of Cribsesque 24' shiny wheels, he rarely uses them to full capacity and typically depletes his tank faster than an H-2 or F-350, gassing out before the 60-minute mark.

On the international stage, it is highly unlikely that FIFA, Sepp Blatter, and his merry henchmen will intervene and implement a green policy to reduce emissions, gas consumption, or a velocity governor to keep top forwards and wingers from breaking the speed limit or even the speed barrier. When talking about breaking the speed barrier, Charlie Davies comes to mind after his stellar 2009 Confederations Cup performance which witnessed his speed unravel both Egypt, Spain, and Brazil's defense. His performance earned him street cred and his own movie and leading role in the US Soccer rendition of the trilogy, Fast and the Furious.

What made me even more furious was prompted from Coach's Bradley's decision to remove the "Fast" from the "Furious". Although Vin Diesel, aka CD9, did not appear in the 2 Fast 2 Furious (the second film), the bald headed bad boy returned to make Fast and Furious, which reunited  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster, the original cast of series. Not as well liked as the Diesel/Walker pairing, Tyrese Gibson seamlessly replaced the 2000's muscle bound version of Sylvester Stalone. While the film series never really received high critical praise, all of the films have been top grossers at the box office, proving that the show must go on. To finish my point, the USMNT will survive despite the CD9 setback, and the US fan favortie will return just like Vin Diesel did. Finding a replacement for him, won't be easy but playing with two target forwards could result in South African disaster. The forward position is wide open and must receive consideration for all speed options.

That being said, included are my wish list for the upcoming friendly.

1. Is he fast or furious? Jeff Cunnigham received his callup making his first appearance in over four years. The pesky and swift forward could do little under the scenario of Slovakia defending with ten men. Perhaps, Coach Bradley does not rate JC very highly, but the same comparison could have been drawn earlier in 2009, when Charlie Davies remained on the bench until the 2009 Confederations Cup. The motivated and volatile striker should be given an opportunity as a starter against Denmark, paired with either Altidore or Johnson. Although he will unlikely play any part in the 2014 World Cup, his red-hot form deserves a fair chance, as his pace terrorized opposing MLS defenses which left seams for his strike partner and midfield. If I see another starting lineup of Casey and Altidore in a friendly, I might pack up and send my DVR with all the recently recorded US games to the US Soccer Federation in protest. When pairing the forwards together, think ying/yang, sweet and sour, or Speed & Speed. Playing with two target forwards will only plateau the US' level of play frustrate many US supporters. The time is now.

2. Edgar Castillo Debut: Hoping that the shifty left back would have made the camp for the Slovakian friendly, Jonathan Bornstein's performance further validated Castillo's inclusion. Although highly criticized for his defensive liability, it is safe to say that Bornstein and Castillo are comparable defensively, but the New Mexico native wins the coin toss due to his greater speed, offensive prowess, and technical skill. His swift overlapping runs could add another element that opposing defenses will have to contend with while attempting to focus on Landon Donovan (BTW, LD will not make the friendly since he will play in the 2009 MLS Cup). In the spirit of experimentation, he needs to be in the starting Xl, since Bornstein's opportunities have been exhausted to nausea.

3. Eddie "Target Forward" Johnson: Before his move to Fulham FC, EJ did not embrace hold-up play circa 2007, but fast forward a year, where glimpses of his improved post play came into fruition in the 2008 England and Spain friendlies. Entering the second half of the Slovak friendly, Johnson aka "GAM" exhibited post play that would make Tim Duncan proud, shielding off Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, drawing several fouls in dangerous areas, and successfully playing out of a crowded final third. Couple this improved play with his darting runs and improved passing, and one can see that his improvement will procure inter-competition at the striker position.

Although many will not agree with the ensuing assessment, it has become apparent that Jozy Altidore does not merit a starting position and conceivably a roster spot, if he continues to play inconsistently for club and country. Creating space with his speed and tenacity, CD9's absence has effected Jozy's game more than people would think. If EJ plays well against Denmark and can secure playing time with either Fulham FC or on loan with another club, he could press for a World Cup spot. The talent exists: Let's hope that he can capitalize on his newly found opportuntity.

4. Make some substitutions at halftime: After waiting until the 72nd minute for reinforcements with exception of EJ who replaced Conor Casey at half time, Coach Bradley's substitutions consisted of a defensive midfielder and center back (McCarty and Goodsen). If the US trails or is tied at halftime, it would be a positve sign to see an aggressive approach to his tactical decisions. Clearly in the past, Coach Bradley has remained more reactive than proactive in his changes, usually waiting for the opposing coach to send out his substitutes. Dictating the tempo early in the second half could give the USA the boost that they need to prevail in Aarhus.

5. More Dax: Before the announcement of the roster facing the Slovakians and Danish, it was interesting to see Dax McCarty receive a call up. Despite a deep central midfield pool, the red-haired midfielder experienced his best professional season in 2009, just falling short of the eighth playoff spot. Against the Slovaks, Dax tempered several counter attacks with good anticipation, tenacity, and intensity. The US' possession game continued its fluidity under the Hoops standout, finding a good balance between defensive and offensive responsibilities and complimenting Michael Bradley in the center midfield. Although a long shot to make the World Cup roster, the former Tarheel will bolster an already talent-filled central midfield, which Includes Bradley, Clark, Edu, Jones, Feilhaber, Torres, and Beckerman.

What would you like to see against the Danish? Will Bradley continue to field an Altidore/Casey pairing? Share your thoughts.

Soccer Goals: Slovakia neutralizes the USA in a 1-0 victory

Posted by Joel Shirey On November - 17 - 2009

Soccer Goals: Experimentation was on the mind of many US supporters, when the US faced Slovakia while taking into consideration that the US missed key starters Jay DeMerit, Oguchi Onyewu, Tim Howard, and Landon Donovan. Trying to fill the most key position, that is the loss of Charlie Davies, took a backseat when Coach Bradley selected the forward pairing of Jozy Altidore and Conor Casey.

Soccer Videos: Highlights of Slovakia's 1-0 defeat of the USMNT

Despite starting the game slow and lethargic and giving away a lion share of the possession, Slovakia drew first blood, when winger Weiss terrorized the right flank, turning defender Jonathan Bornstein into a pretzel with a swift fake and dash to the goal. After being beaten by Weiss' speed and skill on the ball, the Chivas USA defender grabbed, Slovakia version of Bradley Jr., immediately resulting in Weiss' Nestea plung in the box and subsequent penalty. In the 27th minute, MarekHamsik's penalty kick secured the victory as the Slovaks were content to defend with ten men and counter attack opportunistically.

What perplexed many bloggers was the starting forward duo of Conor Casey and Jozy Altidore, who created few chances and lost the ball on numerous occasions due to poor hold-up play, a technique and intensity level that would have even infuriated former and legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, who have sprung up from his recliner at the tender age of 99-years old.

As a blogger pointed on another forum, starting Altidore and Casey at the same time is like playing "King Kong andGodzilla". Although the two monsters make laughable but enjoyable movies, the two target forward combo thwarted potential attacks with their poor touch and hold-up play. In their defense, Casey finds greater success when paired with a speedy forward such as Omar Cummings (Colorado Rapids) or Charlie Davies (see Honduran qualifier). Playing without Donvan complicated matters even more, as most of the defensive attention will be directed Donovan's way freeing space for other players to find the seams. Simply, Conor needs that speed player to compliment his game.

On the other hand, the Hull City forward continues to display poor habits for both club and country. His hold up play, off-the-ball energy, and attacking prowess has hit an all time low, creating opportunities for aspiring and speedy forwards. If Jozy Altidore does not improve his consistency and hustle, his starting position andplaying time could find its way into some other motivated players hands. Noted more for his speed rather than his hold-up play, Eddie Johnson demonstrated a better ability to hold up the ball under pressure. Simply, Altidore must improve his whole game.

While many will continue to point out Jonathan Bornstein's poor defensive performance andthe US' lack of scoring chances - both are true  - the USMNT discovered several positive aspects in their defeat. First, keeper Brad Guzan proved after several athletic saves that he has the big play defensive ability of the baseball gold glover, Ozzie Smith. Unlikely to ever play baseball or do a back flip before the start of an inning, Guzandisplayed his ability to make the crucial one-vs-one save that kept the Slovaks to only a one goal outing, the type of diving saves that landed Ozzie Smith in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Secondly, Jonathan Spector stepped into the center back position and proved that he offers the versatility to play anywhere on the defensive front, complimenting the possession game with his efficient and effective distribution. Third, the central midfield duo of Benny Feilhaber and Michael Bradley played a smart and disciplined tactical game, where neither player was caught out of position like in previous games. If and when Maurice Edu and or Jermaine Jones return to top form, Michael Bradley can return to a more advanced role which should create better attacking sequences, while maintaining a strong defensive presence in the midfield.

Let's see how the US players fared amongst Slovakians, whose strategy preferred to defend first and counter second.

Player Grades

Brad Guzan, 8: If questions still persist to whether "The Worm" is a solid second option, he dispelled these uncertainties with several quality saves and good distribution.

Steve Cherundolo, 7: In the first 20 minutes, the Hanover 96 wing back ignited the US attack with his overlapping runs, offensive support, and dribble penetration. His stock continues to rise as his performance will make Coach Bradley's decision at right back more difficult.

Jonathan Spector, 6.5: Not playing in his natural defensive position out wide, Spector demonstrated his continued versatility andimportance to the team. Couple that with his solid distribution and field chemistry, and his South African seat is all but confirmed.  Failing to step up on an offside trap in the second half was only one of the few mishaps on the night.

Jonathan Bornstein, 4: Winger Weiss, Slovakian'scoaches son, had his way with the Chivas USA back, cutting and slaloming Borstein into a contortionist pretzel. Although he struggled with defending dribble penetration, he did offer two solid overlapping runs andcrosses, one of which found Feilhaber for a solid header on goal and the other which landed in the six yard box before being scooped up by the keeper. Maintaining objectivity is difficult when it is clear that Honduran hero does not translate to the international game. Imagine Franc Ribery, Milos Krasic, or Maicon running at him for 60-90 minutes. No thanks! You get the idea.

Clint Demspey, 6.5: Struggled with the first twenty minutes of the game but settled in afterwards providing the majority of the attack from his efforts. His left footed shot in the first half came close and his pass to spring EJ on a run created several of the few attacks in the US arsenal. Considering that Altidorecontinues to struggle with the most basic of fundamentals such as providing defensive energy and hold up play, perhaps the Deuce will finally receive orders to move up a rung on the offensive ladder to play forward.

Michael Bradley, 6: played the holding role to a T. Although his touch failed him on several occassions, the US midfield fixture compensated with hustle, energy, and tactical disclipline. His communication andunderstanding with Feilhaber stood out as the pairing kept possession and neutralized several counter attacks.

Benny Feilhaber, 6: Despite not producing his marquee through ball pass to a spring a teammate, the Aarhus midfielder proved that his game does consist of energy, hustle and 90-minute fitness. This is not the 2008 Feilhaber, who frustrated many because of his immense potential, playing at a lethargic level and squandering his opportunities in training. For example, in the 82nd minute, he lost the ball in the final third, hustled, recuperated the ball, and drew a free kick just outside the box. Playing time in Denmark has instilled confidence and work rate, while his touch and vision continue to be his forte.

Robbie Rogers, 5.5: In my mind, questions still existed to whether Rogers could play a full 90 minutes on both sides of the ball. Inconstistency still plagued his game at the international and club level, but his performance against the Slovaks proved his potential. Most impressive was his ability to maintain possession under pressure.

Jozy Altidore, 4: After this half-hearted effort and many others, I am not sure that he is a sure fire starter. Although he produces an occasional moment of brilliance, his game has been exposed at the European level for having too many holes.

Conor Casey, 4: The duo did not compliment each other, and the bulky forward allowed himself to be bodied off they ball. I know that he won't win any track meets against opposing defenders, but he must improve his hold up play at the next level.

Coach Bradley, 5: Identified Spector as a center back alternate , while stressing that the Bradley and Feilhaber maintain their tactical disclipline.  Starting both Casey and Altidore was unforgivable considering that this was a friendly to discover another speed player. Why did EJ play more in the hold up role than Jozy? EJ should utilize his speed to create space for other teammates. Why did he wait so long to pull out Jozy? Jeff Cunningham should receive more playing time against Denmark.

Subs

Eddie Johnson, 5.5: Seeing Eddie Johnson playing more of a holding forward role was peculiar considering his forte is to create space for the midfield with his daunting runs. On several occasions he held the ball relaying it to another teammate or drawing fouls. If he had more playing time at Fulham, he could push the other forwards for a spot. I want to see more of him against Denmark.

Dax McCarty, 6: The red-haired middy stifled the Slovak counter attack on several occasions, while showing that he boasts the tenacity, range, skill, and passing to play on the international level. I hope to see more of him against Denmark.

Clarence Goodsen, 4: His introduction caused some miscommunication but settled down later as the duo found their ryhthm.

Sacha Kljestan, 4.5: offered two dangerous crosses but turnovered the ball over three times in eight minutes.

Jeff Cunningham, NR: showed hustle and defensive coverage, but eight minutes did not yield enough to get a grade. I want to see more, though.

What did you think of the US' performance? Will Coach Bradley move Bornstein to the bench? Who do you want to see in the next match? Share your thoughts.

Soccer Goals: Who should the US Start against Slovakia?

Posted by Joel Shirey On November - 13 - 2009

Soccer Goals: After suffering multiple injuries to key USMNT players, the US Soccer headquarters and training grounds looks more like a M.A.S.H. unit than a soccer federation. Oguchi Onyewu, Charlie Davies, and Jay Demerit will miss considerable playing time with both club and country. With CD9's release from the hospital and anticipating a long road to recovery, the US centerback tandem could also miss the World Cup, if injuries persist or their failure to return to form and match fitness.

Soccer videos: Hanneman reflects on new look.

This scary prospect has granted Coach Bradley carte blanche to experiment with his player pool in order to build greater depth and potentially find the next diamond in the rough similar to Charlie Davies' 2009 Confederations Cup performance. Matters won't be easy, though, as many key players will remain stateside to finish out the MLS Playoffs or conclude the Mexican Primera Division season.

Facing a daunting task of  restocking the US' bare kitchen cupboards will challenge the coaching staff and could effect team performance and chemistry. Many questions still persist at forward, center back, and left back. Who will step up their game in the Slovakia and Denmark friendlies to ensure further callups?

In my opinion, the most intriguing topic in these upcoming friendlies is the search for the next forward to emerge as the speedy forward template exploited by Charlie Davies, a position that embodied a physical mentality that unsettled opposing defenses with his speed, intensity, and solid finishing.

Scoring 16 goals in a 15 game span, faster than the commencement, engagemnt, and wedding of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, striker Jeff Cunningham exposed MLS defenders with his speed and one vs. one dribbling, once the talented Kenny Cooper departed FC Dallas to 1860 Munich, while JC assumed the position of the "Man". After four years of being packed away, moth balled, and stored in Bruce Arena's self storage, the volatile and speedy forwards aspires to match and exceed the production of CD9.

Continuing the quest for the the Holy Grail of US Soccer (CD9's replacement), Coach Bradley turns to another oldie-but-goodie, Eddie Johnson. Although relatively young, athletic, and featured as a Fulham reserve, EJ resumes national team duty after a long layoff. Hoping to rekindle the magic that propelled him to considerable praise in the 2004-05 epoch for his international  goal-scoring exploits, his European experience and production has been been more disappointing than the California real estate market.

As many predicted that EJ would be loaned off to another Championship club, Fulham coach Roy Hodgson opted to retain his services after impressing in 2009 preseason and reserve play. Playing time has not come easily, but the frequently criticized Florida native continues to experience the English rigors of fighting for playing time. If EJ's potential and play impresses in the upcoming friendlies, additional callups could be in the cards for 2010.

The most surprising callup came from way out in left field, when Dax McCarty received his first callup for the USMNT. Considered by most to be completely off the international radar, the bouncy red-haired midfielder boastd his best professional season, almost propelling FC Dallas into the playoffs despite a horrid first half season. Although Dax impressed in the 2007 U-20 World Cup and 2008 Olympics qualifiers with technical ability and work rate, he seemed a longshot to receive callup due to the US' dearth of central midfielders and perceived inferior physical demeanor.

Friendlies could have not come at a better time for Coach Bradley and Company, considering that the US desperately needs to find forward depth. Included is the starting Xl that I would field against Slovakia. In addition, I will include the roster that I believe Bradley will unveil on Saturday.

My proposed starting Xl versus Slovakia

------Altidore---Johnson

Rogers-Feilhaber-Bradley-Dempsey

Bornstein-Bocanegra-Marshall-Spector

-----------Guzan--------

2nd Half Substitutes

------Casey----Cunnigham

Kljestan-McCarty-Bradley-Dempsey

Pearce-Bocanegra-Goodson-Spector

----------Guzan-------------

Coach Bradley's Starting Xl

----Casey------Altidore-----

Rogers-Feilhaber-Bradley-Dempsey

Bornstein-Bocanegra-Marshall-Spector

------------Guzan-----------

With the US devoid of real flank play, the starting duo of EJ and Altidore will force the Slovakians to respect our speed, which will create more midfield space to operate. The key to success could emerge in the center midfield, where Feilhaber and Bradley must understand their defensive roles. Not playing a disclipined tactical game could expose a US back line that has looked suspect during stretches during the hexagonal.

Since injuries are part of the game and the US has weathered this storm in many cases, it is hopeful that the USMNT can establish legitimate alternatives for South Africa. Poor form, lack of playing time, and injuries have witnessed several key veterans fall in and out of favor and has forced the US coaching staff to adapt to these setbacks. Although injuries to key starters are not ideal, the US has shown its growth when they implement new players to the squad. Raising their game against Europe competition will bestow greater confidence to Coach Bradley to consider those who were not previously considered.

Who will rise to the top? What is your starting Xl? Which forward would you like to see emerge in the CD9 role? Share your thoughts.
