Soccer Goals: Michael Lewis discusses the USMNT with CONCACAF

Posted by Joel Shirey On February - 15 - 2010

Soccer goals: Before it was even cool to follow soccer stateside -- oh, wait a minute; we're still working on that one -- Michael Lewis was covering US soccer before its infancy. He interviewed with CONCACAF discussing the US' potential in South Africa.

Soccer Goals: After a failed attempt to secure a stadium deal at the former Bannister Mall shopping center, the Wizards announced that they will be building a 200 million dollar complex in Kansas City, Kansas, a location close to Community Ball Park where they currently host their games. Although the franchise has struggled to secure a Soccer Specific Stadium site over the past years, the news should help grow the Wizard franchise and fan base, which has been hindered by the lack of stability as they played in make-shift Community Ball Park.

Soccer Videos: Stephane Auvray highlights

Highlighting other positive preseasons Wizards' news, the mighty Blue have recently acquired the service of Guadalupe central midfielder, Stephane Auvray, a French ligue midfielder who spent the past ten years patrolling the field. Impressing in his Guadalupe debut in the 2007 Gold Cup, which reached the semi-finals in impressive fashion pushing Mexico to the brink of defeat, Auvray boasts a strong work rate, good vision, and technical skill, that will upgrade one the Wizards' weakness, team speed.

"We look forward to Stéphane joining the team," Wizards Manager Peter Vermes said. "His experience playing in Europe, being the captain of the Guadalupe National Team and his leadership skills will make him a valuable asset to the Kansas City Wizards."

One facet that has become apparent since the acquisition of Kei Kamara, is that Coach Peter Vermes understands the value of team speed and has addressed this issue in the draft and via free agency. Although I have praised the Wizards for player development and finding those diamonds in the rough, their recent free agency history and relying on South American prospects to fill team needs, while trading away their team speed i.e. Scott Sealy and Eddie Johnson) finally lead to their 2009 demise, where the organization struggled during the final stretch of the season.

But, let's not focus on their soccer mishaps: The Wizards seem to be headed in the right direction. Recent draft choices forward Teal Bunbury, and left back/winger Olukorede Aiyegbusi fit the bill, upgrading team speed, while defenders Nick Cardenas and Ofori Sarkodie provide depth. Colombian central defender, Pablo Escobar, and defensive midifielder, Stepane Auvray, bolster their squad, as recent Colombian defenders have experienced good success rate in MLS, players such as Jamison Olave, Yamith Cuesta, and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.

The question still remains, how many wing backs will stay on the roster? It is possible that Michael Harrington and Chance Myers could be moving up the field in a midfield wing position. If that is the case, the Wizards will bolster strong wingers with a solid central midfield depth. If Kei Kamara returns after his European trials and resigns with the Big Blue, the Wizards will have fostered team depth, improved attacking options and team speed during the off season, a trait that should have been addressed in years past.

Though the Wizards will continue to acquire new players to further bolster their roster, their change of philosophy could make the difference in the upcoming season.

Here is a potential Starting Xl based on current players available

----Kamara----Wolff

Espinoza-Jewsbury-Auvray-Arnaud

Harrington-Bessley-Conrad-Leathers

---------Hartman---------

Note: Chance Myers, Lance Watson, or Olukorede Aiyegbusi could slot into either wing back positions.

Soccer Goals: USMNT collapse against Honduras in 1-3 defeat

Posted by Joel Shirey On January - 25 - 2010

Soccer goals: The Honduras friendly was supposed to provide an opportunity to evaluate several players to possibly strengthen the USMNT squad, but those hopes of properly evaluating the team as a unit ended, when defender Jimmy Conrad earned a second yellow and penalty kick. To make matter worse, the disjointed and uninspired US squad started the game like it was a scrimmage or a stroll on the boardwalk. Thus, the 3-1 spanking ensued at Home Depot Center.

Soccer Videos: USA vs Honduras 1-3 highlights

Even though the second Conrad foul evoked negative emotions and a sigh of -- did he really call that foul? -- the reality suggests that the US continues to play too carelessly in international events and are therefore punished for their actions. It's the deja vu that gives you a tummy-ache, the type that one feels when they gorge themselves with Oreo cookies and milk or endless buffalo wings and blue-cheese dressing.

The first thing that ran through my mind after Conrad's ejection was not the score but rather the opportunity cost to shine for the fringe players, who aspired to make their mark with a strong performance. Can we really fairly evaluate everyone's performance based on this ten-man performance? Although I will take a stab at the player rankings, I will leave an asterisk for this game as a reminder that the players could have excelled better under a normal scenario.

Let's give credit to where credit is due: The Catrachos took advantage of their situation andutilized their width to their favor. Although the referee called that questionable foul, which I agree was feasible, it strikes me as funny that Amado Guevara was not given a yellow card for his hard challenge on a counter attacking Benny Feilhaber, who was impeded by his obstruction-infused challenge in the 42nd minute. In addition, Guevara earned a yellow card for a trip on a Robbie Roger's break-away. Now the game is 10 v 10. Calling a consistent game resonates as my only gripe.

With that in mind, Soccer Addict News presents to you the Honduras vs USA player ratings.

Troy Perkins, 6 - Despite being beaten for three goals, his anticipation and distribution earned him an average performance. Not losing his poise earned points in my eyes, while the center-combo of Marshall and Conrad could have jeopardized his performance.

Marvell Wynne, 4.5 - I must admit his athleticism and tenacity impressed but his crossing and failure to maintain good positional sense disappointed even more. It has become apparent that his raw skill set has yet to translate at the international level. He should have recovered better on the Espinoza goal by recovering to mark him.

Chad Marshall, 4 - His first 15 minutes embodied a normal Marshall performance, but then his play spiraled out of control after Conrad left the field. Conceding the second goal ball watching and during the third goal keeping Roger Espinoza on side, while not closing him down, hurt his chances. Poor distribution, anticipation, and defensive communication hindered his game throughout the sixty-minutes.

Jimmy Conrad, 2- As a veteran and leader of the team, Conrad should know better. Looking on the bright side, his performance might have enlightened Coach Bradley to distinguish that he must evaluate other options such as Michael Orozco or Darius Barnes. The Wizard defender can no longer compete with international speed.

Jonathan Bornstein, 5.5- After the US went a man down, Jonnie B shined defensively, as he became a leader and ushered attacks out of danger. It appears the reason that the Honduran hero has yet to take a vacation and visit the President is because he has been practicing his trapping and passing endlessly against his house wall, since the Chivas USA bowed out of the playoffs. His touch has improved, while his distribution continues to threaten his World Cup status.

Robbie Rogers, 6.5 - Despite playing out of position as a quasi Left winger/defender, the speedy attacker demonstrated poise on the ball, good work rate, and dangerous attacking sequences. Although I would like to see his menacing runs down the flank, his on-the-ball composure under pressure suggests that he can handle the international rigors of limited space and intense speed of play. His shot off the post proves that the Crew winger must assert himself offensively.

Kyle Beckerman, 4.5- Under an eleven-man scenario, the Rhasta man should have experienced a better game. But, unfortunately for him his play neither impressed nor discounted his chances for a World cup spot. Paired with Feilhaber, the duo should have run the Catrachos ragged with their possession and strong interchange.

Benny Feilhaber, 5.5- Another player effected severely from the dismissal of Conrad, Feilhaber could not exploit the Catrachos defense or take advantage of US' speed in the form of Rogers, Findley, and Cunningham. In his defense, his possession and dribble penetration caused fits for the Catracho defense.

Sacha Kljestan, 3.5- Besides providing numerous errant passes, experiencing a suspect touch, and awkardly bumping into his own players, the Chivas USA play maker struggled in the overall match landscape. When he plays simple, his game flourishes, but he complicated matters by attempting cute passes which resulted in counter attacks or killed attacking momentum in the final third. This performance might have provided the proverbially nail in th coffin for Kljestan's World Cup aspirations.

Jeff Cunningham, 4- The forward duo were the most devastated from Conrad's early shower, but not working hard on the defensive side and playing extremely casual hurt his performance. His touch and intensity seemed to have remained in Denmark, since the play that was evidenced on Saturday came from an uninspired Cunningham.

Robbie Findley, 5.5- When he ran into space with the ball, Findley cause defensive imbalance, but when he received the ball in the air or with his back facing the goal, his touch failed him miserably as the ball would bounce 6-8 feet away from him. Once paired with target forward, Conor Casey, who absorbed the defensive pressure and performed the dirty work, the RSL leading goal scorer offered glimpses of his potential, as he utilized his speed to unsettle the Catracho back line.

Coach Bradley, 5.5- I must give him credit for an aggressive line up which featured Cunningham and Findley at forward. While his strategy bestowed offensive carte blanche to his midfield, his insertion of Jimmy Conrad downgraded him a notch, considering that the KC Wizard seems to be an outsider for the USMNT. It was also good that he allowed his team to play without a defensive substitution until the second half.

Subs

Clarence Goodson, 6 - Besides netting a great header from a set-piece play, his defense and anticipation help shore up the back line. Leading the back line in the second half helped his chances better than any fringe player.

Conor Casey, 6 - His hold-up play allowed the team space to play and gave Robbie Findley time to make his menacing runs. Solid Performance.

Heath Pearce, 5 - Just when you need an opportunity to shine and gain advantage for the left back position, the FC Dallas lefty offered little in the attack but solid in defense.

Alejandro Bedoya, 6 - Considering it was his first cap in poor circumstances, the Boston College Eagle interchanged well with team mates while unsettling his defenders in the attack. Could he make a late run to a World Cup spot?

Brad Davis, 6 - Offered good set-piece play while settling down the offense with composed decision making.

Dax McCarty, 5 - Entered the game with little on the line but kept the ball whizzing around the field.

Who impressed most against the Catrachos? Were you impressed by the Catracho's passing and counter attacking? Share your thoughts.

Soccer Goals: Sick Foot skills Mixtape - Viva Futbol Volume 46

Posted by Joel Shirey On January - 23 - 2010

Soccer goals: After Jozy, Run DMB, and Maurice Edu relegated to the stands and not even the bench, I offer you the greatest gift of all, soccer mixtapes. This foot-skill video features some sick moves and can provide ideas that you can use on your friends. Speaking of dissing your opponents, I used these tapes as motivation utilizing them as I offered a pre-nutmeg declaration: He knew it was coming, and I still pulled it off with finesse. The stylish nutmeg that caused my Latin colleagues to call out the chump that I just punked. Faking the pass and gently rolling it through his legs, while in shock as the ball rolls through his legs in slow motion.

Actually, during the pick-up game, I scored a nutmeg hat-trick (or as they say in spanish a triple cocina).  Tricking my defender has cheered me up because I have been bummed by the recent injury bug and poor club form of some Yanks abroad that I won't mention. Anyway, enjoy the soccer videos and the USMNT game tonight.

Soccer Goals: SAN Best Xl January Camp Developments

Posted by Joel Shirey On January - 21 - 2010

Soccer Goals: As the USMNT suffers injuries to starters at the same alerting rate of super clubs Manchester United and Arsenal, Bob Bradley must utilize his camps to evaluate potential replacements and tinker with his lineups and tactics to prepare for several key omissions.

Soccer Videos: 2010 January Camp Training session

Preparing for the worst will enable Coach Bradley to handle potential setbacks such as injuries, rehab setbacks, and poor player form. Not being proactive and understanding that his starting Xl could suffer the injury bug or club bench relegation, could spell pain and heartache, especially if the staff can not obtain the magical soccer elixir, the remedy that has solved many problems for top international managers and sent the Stars and Stripes to the Confederations Cup final.

With that in mind, these injury setbacks could be a blessing in disguise as Coach Bradley and crew must formulate alternative tactics, if several key players do not return to full health or top form. First, experimentation and desperation landed Charlie Davies the opportunity to excel as a starter during the Confederations Cup. Second, Landon Donovan found his ideal position, attacking winger, when many coaches slotted him at forward, where he would disappear for stretches during the game. His increased touches have given him confidence and more opportunities to flourish i.e. USMNT circa 2009 and Everton FC.

In the spirit of obligatory experimentation, Coach Bradley should embrace President Obama's campaign slogan "Time for Change" which could help them find the missing pieces to their World Cup puzzle. Who will that be? Your guess is good as mine. But addressing these issues in the upcoming friendlies will quell US supporters' anxiety. Included are my Starting Xl theme for change.

Best Xl: January Camp Developments

1. Can Jeff Cunningham score again? - No player has been more overlooked and underappreciated than the speedy FC Dallas forward, second place in MLS history with 121 goals (Shawshank Redemption resembles his current story: Will he retire in the Pacific or Caribbean as a heroic national teamer). After scoring 17 goals in the second half of the season, the USF Bull has punished opposing defenses despite his 33-year old veteran legs. His speed and attacking inclinations could lead to his inclusion after Charlie Davies' absence. Auxere paid attention, allowing him to train with them during the MLS break. If he scores in either upcoming friendlies, Coach Bradley will have to take him to Holland.

2. Will Robbie Findley impress internationally? - Considered the other viable option to replace the injured Chuck D, the strong and speedy RSL striker aspires to make a good first impression. His attacking qualities transformed RSL into a contender during the late stages of the season and playoffs. Scoring 12 goals and adding four assists, combined with his 2009 playoff three goals and one assist, catapulted him higher up the US forward depth chart.

3. Jozy Altidore's club status- Unable to score a goal in English Premier League play, the Hull City loanee could fall further down the Tiger's bench, as reinforcements emerge in the form of Egypt's Zaki and Mido. If the hulkish forward continues to receive the red-haired step-child treatment mostly due to his fault, will coach Bradley opt for different tactics, formation, or return to long ball featuring a more consistent but awkward target forward?

4. Clint Demspey's time table uncertain- Continuing with the forward theme, the Deuce appeared poised to shift to forward after flourishing with Fulham, which witnessed wonder goals and bicycle kicks galore. Fast forward thirty minutes of pure Dempsey offensive bliss, and the Deuce suffered moderate ligament damage.  With Deuce potentially out and Jozy on ice, will coach Bradley opt for two speedy-forwards combo, a cumbersome target forward paired with a burner, or move to a 4-5-1 to accommodate for forward dearth while utilizing the multiple midfield options?

5. Mandon (Landon) to forward- As long as it has taken to find his ideal position, the time it now takes me to run a 10k race, the Everton loanee could slide up top to forward  faster than a Usain Bolt 100m race. Let's hope that several forwards will emerge before this tactic is implemented -- it could mean two steps forward but six steps back.

6. Changing tactics- The Confederations Cup roller coaster ride taught us at least one thing, that depth and tactics can yield improvements in performance (Charlie Davies' emergence and the excavation of Donovan's ideal position). If Dempsey is still injured and Altidore's form disintegrates, would coach Bradley be willing to play a two-speedy-forward pairing? Perhaps, a shift to a possession style that would suit Kenny Cooper, Benny Feilhaber, and Paco Torres would be feasible? Injuries might force the hand.

7. Solidify left back- Whether it be the Honduran hero, Jonathan Bornstein, Heath Pearce, and or Tigres speedster Edgar Castillo, the left back position has received more coverage and scrutiny than the Tiger Woods' sex scandal. Considered the favorite by Coach Bradley, Jonathan Bornstein must further solidify his grasps on the position, a one-game wonder that rightly or not deemed him a Messi killer. Pearce still hasn't recovered from his European odyssey, while Castillo performed poorly in a recent Interliga game in which Coach Bradley went to evaluate his play. Though his potential trumps the formers, questions still persist about his discipline and maturity.

8. What is Geoff Cameron's best position? - Finding a place for a versatile and athletic players should be easy for any coach, right? In Cameron's case, his club and country have yet to identify his ideal position. Let's say he suffers from Jonathan Spector syndrome. The Dynamo jack-of-all-trades performed well in the 2009 MLS All Star Game against Everton, where he utilized his speed on the flank as a right back. If he performs well, his skill set could translate well to the next level and could earn him a spot over a more talented but less versatile player.

9. Alejandro Bedoya's inclusion- With few of his games broad casted on FSC or Setanta, few possess knowledge of his Swedish exploits, as many hope to catch his precious minutes but remain frustrated dealing with the volatile live streams. Known for excellent endurance, good speed, and creative attacking qualities, Bedoya's inclusion would be very welcomed considered many supporters have limited knowledge of his game, myself included. Did he impress enough to receive playing time this Saturday? If Donovan shifts to forward, Coach Bradley will embark on a search to find two-way wingers: He might just fit the bill.

10. Kevin Alston vs Marvell Wynne- After experiencing a superb rookie season, Revs right back, Kevin Alston, aspires to impress in the January Camp and during the Honduras game. Boasting speed galore, good technique, lock-down defensive qualities, and a penchant for dangerous overlapping runs, the former U-17 standout must thoroughly impress, having to compete for spots against Cherundolo, Spector, Cameron, Hejduk, and Wynne.

Receiving the short end of the stick debuting in the away qualifier at Estadio Saprissa, where Los Ticos dismantled Bradley's newly minted 4-3-3, right back Marvell Wynne emerged as a victim of the system, a debut performance that did not experience the suspect game that many had felt, which was more due to an inept midfield than his poor play. Although he boasts immense upside which came into fruition in the Olympics and during a seasoned professional career, questions still remain, regarding his awkward touch, defensive skills reliant on athleticism, and limited tactical sense.

Whoever impresses in the ensuing friendlies could make his case for future callups looking forward to Brazil 2014.

11. And the winner is: Edu, Clark, or Jones?- With all three players vying for a World Cup spot, Jermaine Jones and Maurice Edu recovering from injury, while Ricardo Clark embarks on a new German adventure signing with Eintracht Frankfurt, something has to give in the US central midfield. Although it is luxury to boast such an ample stable of holding midfielders, midfield battle could become even more congested if Kyle Beckerman impresses in the upcoming friendlies, especially given the fact that Coach Bradley could adopt different tactics due to the rash of injuries. Though devoid of the athleticism and range of the former mentioned candidates, Beckerman thrives as a ball winner who can provide quick and deft passing, coupled with perpetual movement and reliable offensive interchanges.

Who will impress in the January Camp? Who will score in the upcoming friendlies? Will Honduras expose the USA's dearth of experience? Share your thoughts.

Soccer Goals: Hoping to find that diamond in the rough, coach Miriam Rueda has named a domestically loaded squad that will face USA on Saturday January, 23rd. Kansas City Wizard's midfielder, Roger Espinoza is the only Honduaran abroad called into the camp. Carlos Pavon, Amado Guevara and Walter Martinez are just a few of the domestic players featured in the lineup.
