With seven home games remaining in their final stretch, Fulham must take advantage of their winnable home games such as West Brom, Hull City, and Blackburn Rovers which could yield a potential nine points. West Brom and Hull City have conceded the most goals this season 47 and 46, respectively. Hull City, the Cinderella story of the first half of the season, is plunging down the table faster than US real estate values and stock market. After resembling a team on the rise in the 2007-08 season, Blackburn Rovers will attempt to escape relegation but have allowed 40 goals and tallied a -13 goal differential.
If Fulham can earn all 9 points on these fixtures, Coach Hodgsoncan focus on winning upcoming away games such as Bolton Wanderers, Middlesborough, and New Castle United. Middlesborough, Bolton, and New Castle have distinguished themselves as some of the top worst defenses in the table conceding goals 36, 40, and 42, respectively. Although Bolton and Middlesborough should be fighting for relegation, it is fortunate that Fulham will meet Bolton in March and Middlesborough in April before the relegation madness commences in May.
If I were betting man, I would say that during those away games that Fulham can realistically earn five to six points. If Fulham is able to earn six to seven points in their winnable home matches, Hodgson could tally 41-43 points which would be a drastic improvement from last year as they escaped relegation on the last game of the season. This forecasted score does not include potential points that could be earned during matches against top-ten opponents. It is possible that Fulham will steal two points from top ten teams at home which could be Aston Villa and Everton. Although this perspective is wishful thinking, Fulham does play well at Craven Cottage and still boasts a top four defense.
Hodgson believes that the next three games against West Brom, Arsenal, and Hull City are crucial to the conclusion of the season. After losses in the Premier league competition, Fulham's following games have resulted in a 4-5-2 record. Although their play was horrid against Manchester United losing 3-0, Fulham should exert their anger and frustration on West Bromwich convincingly winning 2-0. Look for Andy Johnson to score and Clint Dempsey to incorporate a hip-hop induced flavor to his celebration as Fulham earns another three points.
