Soccer Goals: As I diligently searched for Barclay's Premiere League stats, I stumbled upon the BPL leading scorer statistics. While reviewing the kings who are prone to tallying multiple golazos, an interesting stat jumped of the page: English players have landed five top-net exploiters in the Top 10 during the 2009-2010 season. What is even more interesting is that the three of the top four goal scorers are English (Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, and Darren Bent).
Soccer Videos: Rooney has already netted 21 goals this season
To make matters worse, the US' injury-plagued defenders will face these deadly strikers on June 12th in South Africa. But, let's not get distracted from the point at hand. Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, Darren Bent, Frank Lampard, and Gabriel Agbonlahor have all landed in the Top 10 goal scoring chart.
All these lethal attackers have produced this season hoping to receive an invitation to the "Big Dance". It would be difficult to believe that any of these players would be left out. But with only four spots open at striker, it is possible that one of these talented attackers will be omitted from the Three Lions' roster.
So what do these stats have to do with Major League Soccer? US domestic players have also landed five of the top scorers in the Top 10 goal-scoring chart. Jeff Cunningham and Conor Casey topped the list with 17 and 16 goals, respectively. Landon Donovan and Robbie Findley tied with 12 goals, while veteran Josh Wolff rounded out the "Top Ten" with 11 goals.
As most people assume that in the BPL and MLS, the top scorers travel from foreign lands to fill the goal scoring demand. However, the domestic players have demonstrated their goal scoring production and prowess over the past few seasons. Didier Drogbaand Fernando Torres have proven their worth as elite strikers in the top leagues, but the domestic player has filled a useful void.
Foreign players offer the creativity and attacking capabilities that make teams tick, but the domestic player provides stability and production. For your efforts, we recognizes your exploits.
When will the leagues and fans better appreciate the domestic player? Their play is essential to the league's success.
