Soccer Goals: Is winning in Azteca impossible?

Posted by Joel Shirey On August - 11 - 2009

Soccer goals: After going down a goal to Mexico in the 2007 Gold Cup Final, the USMNT rallied with  two goals in the second half, one goal that has been a sore subject for Mexican fans as Benny Feilhaber hit a long range volley. Although the USMNT appeared on the outside looking in, they persevered securing a spot in the 2009 Confederations Cup. Even Miss USA 2007 graced the USMNT with their presence, nervously cheering on the the red, white, and blue.

These soccer videos feature footage of the USMNT historic victories over Mexico and Spain.

Overcoming  the one goal deficit allowed the USMNT to compete against Italy, Brazil, Spain, and Egypt in the Confederations Cup which witnessed both the highs and lows during the tournament. After losing their first two matches to Italy and Brazil, the USA needed a miracle (a 3-0 US victory over Egypt: a 3-0 Brazil victory over Italy). What was even more impressive and very unlikely was the stunning victory that the USMNT produced against Spain, securing the 2-0 victory against a Spanish side that had produced a 35 game unbeaten streak.

Despite losing in the final to Brazil despite leading 2-0 at half time, the US conceded an early goal which would create the Brazilian offensive onslaught and the eventual game winner. Taking everything in perspective, very few would have given the USMNT an opportunity to advance to the final, and even less would have believed that the USA would score two first half goals.

The lessons that the USA have learned this summer have been invaluable. Conquering the Azteca and its elements will not be an easy task. However, the USMNT could prove to be the first team to secure a victory in Azteca.

The forecast in Mexico City will be 75' and chance of rain during the game. Will the USMNT defy all odds?
