Soccer goals: Facing Super Club AC Milan with Ronaldinho highlighting the match, Club America shocked the Italian Red and Black, maintaining stretches of possession and out working their Italian opponents. Enrique Esqueda tresspassed Oguchi Onyewu's territory with a jumping header in goal which badly christened Onyewu's AC Milan Debut. Filipo Inzaggi would equalize in the 66th minute with a sprinting one touch volley, set up by a perfect Mathieu Flamini through ball. Earning the last laugh, Club America forward, Daniel Marquez, exploited Gianlucca Zambrotta's casual man marking for the aerially header, securing America a 2-1 victory and international notariety for Mexican soccer.

Wearing the Red and Black stripes offered considerable pressure for the towering defender as he eventually settled into the game. Onyewu demonstrated good distribution, dribbling and footworked that showcased his skill as he quickly two-touched and faked out his opponent moving right to left while drawing the foul. Although Gooch should assume responsibility for the first goal, these additional friendlies will allow him to build an on-the-field chemistry and reduce the language barrier that could plague his play early in the season. Attempting to compensate for his mental lapse early in the game, Onyewu sent a perfect header to Italian striker Gianmarco Zigoni who muffed the strike wide right of goal.

Slicing and dicing opponents with his dribble penetration and 1v1 attacking flair, Ronaldinho displayed glimpses of his previous Barcelona form, when he was considered one of the top international players. Several set piece strikes offered pinpoint accuracy while one shot smacked the post. Concluding a productive night, the Brazilian defender offered several incisive passes and provided silky smooth foot skills.

Soccer Goals: Oguchi Onyewu signs with AC Milan

Posted by Joel Shirey On July - 7 - 2009

Soccer Goals: Yes, you heard that right: Oguchi Onyewu heads to AC Milan on a free transfer. After rumors and speculation persisted that Real Madrid became interested in the US defender, AC Milan inked Oguchi Onyyewu to a three year deal.

Demonstrating a porous defense and falling to fourth place in Serie A, AC Milan has solidified the defense with the additions of Silva and now Onyewu. Prone to injuries, Alessandro Nesta and Kakha Kaladze will slot in as the other center back candidates. This demonstrates that Onyewu should receive playing time considering that those two veterans have struggled with injuries.

After securing Onyewu's services on a free transfer, AC Milan has stated interest in acquiring a top level forward, such as  Real forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Sevilla's Luis Fabiano, Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor and VfL Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko.

This signing could prove valuable for Gooch and other US internationals who desire to play at super clubs and at the highest level. If the US center back can perform and exceed expectations, then other clubs should begin to consider other US internationals as the status and respect for US soccer will increase.

What do you think of the move? Will Onyewu earn one of the starting positions? Share your thoughts.
