Soccer goals and soccer videos: Depleted of key veteran presence and playing with a make shift squad, the New England Revolutions challenged the Chicago Fire until Cuauhtemoc Blanco noted a perfect set piece goal. It is fortunate for MLS that the Chicago Fire qualify for the Super Liga final and field a competitive team that should give Tigres a run for their money. The New England Revs could not offer the same level of competition that the Fire will provide on August 5th.
These soccer videos features highlights of the Revs vs Fire and Santos vs Tigres.
In the other Superliga Final, The Tigres pounced on Santos Laguna with two early first half goals, securing a 3-2 victory to advance to the Superliga Final. Franciso Fonseca scored a brace in the first half and frustrated Mexican keeper Oswaldo Sanchez who screamed at his defense after both goals. Although it appeared that the Tigres were a Super Liga aberration, they have proven that they can compete with the best, defeating the talented Santos Laguna.
Fonseca's play reminded me how this talented player has fallen off the National team radar. Before the 2006 World Cup, Fonseca provided a dynamic element to the Mexican attack. His national team numbers speak for themselves with 43 appearances and 21 goals but has not suited up for El Tri in over two years. It will be interesting to see if the former Benefica foward will land himself on the Mexican National Team Radar.
Future US international defender, Edgar Castillo, offered great passing and overlapping runs for the Tigres but failed to mark Darwin Quintero on the first Santos goal. On several occasions, Castillo stopped several Quintero dribble penetrations by using his lateral quickness and speed to detain the speedy Colombian winger. If the New Mexico native can eliminate his mental lapses and improve his man-marking, his offensive skill and speed could provide a valuable asset to the USMNT and could provide Landon Donovan additional space with the added flank firepower.
What did you think of Edgar Castillo's performance? Will Coach Bradley call him on a regular basis? Will he played disciplined for the Stars and Stripes? Share your thoughts.
